CNN reporter Abby Phillip on Wednesday said that there's growing recognition within the Trump White House that they are badly losing the public relations battle over President Donald Trump's policy of separating immigrant children from their families.
Phillip noted that the White House has been crippled from the outset in defending its policy by offering multiple, conflicting rationales for it -- ranging from saying it's an effective deterrent for undocumented immigrants to trying to falsely blame the Democrats for family separation.
"President Trump is clearly frustrated by the narrative that is out there about this issue," Phillip said. "He has been blaming Democrats and also pushing back on some of these images that you just described -- children being held at these facilities on the border."
That said, Phillip said that the White House seems to know that it has badly botched its handling of the immigrant family crisis.
"There is a sense within this building right now that this is not working for them," she said. "There is so much push-back, so much pressure, that it will very likely force him to do something."
