President Donald Trump constantly complains about the free press, but occasionally his tweets and other comments betray how badly he craves media approval.
The president bragged Wednesday morning that he got a compliment from "fake news CNN" after the network reported that John Cox finished second in the California primary and will appear on November's gubernatorial ballot after Trump endorsed his campaign.
"Great night for Republicans!" Trump tweeted. "Congratulations to John Cox on a really big number in California. He can win. Even Fake News CNN said the Trump impact was really big, much bigger than they ever thought possible. So much for the big Blue Wave, it may be a big Red Wave. Working hard!"

CNN political analyst Harry Enten commented shortly before this tweet that he believed Trump's endorsement had boosted Cox's name recognition in the days ahead of the election.
