According to a report by Axios, Michael Cohen, the former personal attorney for Donald Trump told congressional investigators he was wasn't sure if the president was aware that insiders in his campaign were meeting with Russians in a 2016 meeting at Trump Tower.
The report states that three insiders have confirmed Cohen made the statement and that his attorney, Lanny Davis, said that Cohen will maintain that he is still unaware of any information that would lead him to believe Trump knew about the meeting that included his son, Don Trump Jr.
"Nothing has changed," Davis told Axios.
Last year, Cohen met with Congressional investigators and claimed he had no knowledge of the meeting beforehand nor did he know if Trump did either, said the three sources familiar with his testimony.
Despite his previous testimony, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr (R-NC) and Vice Chair Sen. Mark Warner (D-NC) still plan to have Cohen appear before Congress and answer more questions.
"We recently re-engaged with Mr. Cohen and his team following press reports that suggested he had advance knowledge of the June 2016 meeting between campaign officials and Russian lawyers at Trump Tower," they said in a statement. "The Committee inquired of Mr. Cohen's legal team as to whether Mr. Cohen stood by his testimony. They responded that he did stand by his testimony. We hope ... Mr. Cohen’s plea agreement will not preclude his appearance before our Committee as needed for our ongoing investigation.”
