Did Kurt Cobain, the late Nirvana frontman who took his own life 25 years ago, prophesy the presidency of Donald Trump?
In fact, he did not -- but that hasn't stopped Trump supporters from using phony quotes to claim that he did.
The purported Cobain quote, which is being shared by Trump supporters across social media, features Cobain musing about America electing a "business tycoon... like Donald Trump" in the future.
"America needs an outsider," the phony Cobain quote reads in part. "A business tycoon that can't be bought who does what's right for the people."
Daily Beast reporter Lachlan Markay traces the origin of the fake quote to 2016, when it was invented by a pro-Trump Facebook group. Ever since then, however, it has been passed around as gospel by some Trump supporters.
"The idea that Cobain would ever muse positively about a 'business tycoon' doing 'right for the people' should immediately set off your bullshit detector," Markay comments.
