Conspiracy theories have sprung up about the anonymous New York Times op-ed since it was released. Pundits have speculated whether it was someone in the Pentagon or in national intelligence, but others have thrown out ideas like President Donald Trump, his wife Melania and comedians have joked it could be Trump's youngest daughter Tiffany. But Fox News came up with a whole new level of conspiracy.

According to Greg Gutfeld and Judge Jeanine Pirro, the New York Times probably wrote it themselves. The theory first sprung up on Fox News Sunday night when Candace Owens proposed The Times decided to throw the theory out.

Gutfeld claimed the Times ran the op-ed to “trim the sales” of Bob Woodward‘s upcoming book Fear and “hurt the paper’s chief rival, The Washington Post.”

“Without further notice, I’m going to assume that The Times wrote it until they prove otherwise," Gutfeld said. "Because the thing is, they should want to clear their name by proving to me that somebody else wrote it.”

He then noted Trump should go after The Times and accuse them of writing the opinion article and go into full attack mode with the paper.

“Who do you think wrote this?” Gutfeld asked Pirro.

“I think the New York Times wrote it,” she parroted. “But what do I know. No one knows.”
