Veteran journalist Dan Rather has reported on every president since Dwight D. Eisenhower — but the latest news encircling Donald Trump, he said during an MSNBC appearance Monday, is some of the "craziest" he's seen.

"This has been such a crazy day," Rather told host Ari Melber. "I went through the Watergate period, that's true — but this is even crazier."

Responding to the mounting sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and reports that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein may soon resign or be fired by the president, the veteran journalist suggested Trumpworld news has reached peak insanity.

"I think a lot of people felt, as I did today, that we're sort of traveling through a wormhole of the absurd in real-time," Rather said.

The veteran newsman went on to claim that although "history may look back on it in a different way," the president is clearly working to distract from his imploding Supreme Court nominee.

"This is about Kavanaugh," Rather said. "The Rosenstein business is a distraction from Kavanaugh."
