President Donald Trump is traveling the country in an attempt to fight off a so-called "blue wave" of Democrats being elected in November. Meanwhile, his White House is preparing for the worst.
A Sunday Axios report said that Chief of Staff John Kelly has formed a kind of "working group" to come up with a strategist to protect Trumpworld. During an offsite weekend retreat at the end of October, the senior White House staff is expected to discuss investigations Democrats plan to conduct.
Officials have told Axios for weeks that they're worried Kelly wasn't taking the threat of a Democratic House seriously. In the several senior staff meetings each week, Kelly has been mum.
"You'd think we'd have a briefing or something to help us understand what's coming with subpoenas and investigations," one White House official told Axios.
The site has spoken with lawyers who worked inside of the Clinton and Obama White Houses, who describe what it is like when the other party controls the legislature. They described subpoenas flying and that the "system stops," leaving a White House barely operating. That's for a White House that was operating at the top of its game, fully staffed and functional. The Trump White House has struggled both with hiring and keeping staff as well with generally functioning on the skeleton staff they have.
