Mexicans are enraged at their outgoing president for giving highest honor to Jared Kushner

Mexicans are furious their outgoing president will bestow the nation's highest honor for foreigners on President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.

President Enrique Peña Nieto praised Kushner as a "a grand ally of Mexico" -- but many of the nation's people were angry that he would decorate the Trump adviser this week with the Order of the Aztec Eagle, reported The Guardian.

“Giving [Kushner] the Aztec Eagle is a supreme act of humiliation and cowardice,” tweeted historian Enrique Krauze.

Trump has repeatedly made insulting comments about Mexicans during his campaign and as president, and frequently demonizes Latino migrants and just Tuesday threatened to permanently close the U.S.-Mexico border.

“This is the perfect ending for Peña Nieto’s term: an insuperable illustration of the indignity of his government’s position regarding Trump," said Carlos Bravo Regidor, a professor at the Centre for Research and Teaching in Economics. “It’s the final kick in the crutch for Mexicans.”

Peña Nieto praised Kushner as a "a grand ally of Mexico" in his decision to award the honor that has been previously bestowed upon Queen Elizabeth, Nelson Mandela and Walt Disney.

“He has been an important actor in this objective of having a good understanding of the new government that entered two years ago," the Mexican president said.

Peña Nieto is expected to sign the revised North American Free Trade Agreement -- now known as USMCA -- later this week at the G20 summit in Argentina.
