Donald Trump's friend and former lawyer Jay Goldberg thinks the president may be misleading the public with his insistence that he personally wrote his answers to special counsel Robert Mueller.

"That's a big mistake," the attorney told CNN's Erin Burnett.

Quoting Mark Twain, Goldberg said that "a person who acts as his own lawyer has a fool for a client" and that the president could be leading himself into a perjury trap by doing so.

Burnett asked the lawyer why, then, Trump would insist on writing the answers to Mueller's questions and he responded that "the question would be whether he did."

"He may be trying to [be] macho," Goldberg said, "but I can't imagine that [Trump's attorney Rudy] Giuliani wouldn't have gone over the answers to make sure that they're accurate or not."

"I'm not sure that the president is telling the absolute truth when he says that he wrote these answers out himself," he added.
