A CNN panel on Wednesday concluded that President Donald Trump made a serious misjudgment when he tried to openly spar with Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer this week.
After playing a clip of Pelosi shutting down the president during a meeting at the White House this week, CNN host John Berman said that she likely earned significant points with Democratic voters who saw she would not back down when attacked by the president.
"A lot of Democrats looked at that and said, 'You know what? She went in there and she took on the president and she looked like the grownup,'" he explained.
Joe Lockhart, a former press secretary to President Bill Clinton, agreed that Pelosi had done a lot to improve her standing among her own caucus.
"She dealt a serious blow to mansplaining," Lockhart joked. "The demise of Nancy Pelosi has been way overblown, but she definitely helped herself yesterday."
CNN's Alisyn Camerota then wondered if Pelosi and Schumer actually went to the White House to work out a deal on funding the government or if they went to "school the president that there's a new sheriff in town," and that they won't bend over backward to make him happy like outgoing Republican Speaker Paul Ryan.
