Retired Pennsylvania Republican Congressman Charlie Dent told CNN Wednesday that Mitt Romney's op-ed attacking President Donald Trump's character was factually correct, and that the GOP needed to hold an intervention with the increasingly erratic president.
"I believe Mitt Romney actually is correct," said Dent in response to RNC chair Ronna McDaniels' characterization of the essay as "disappointing and unproductive". McDaniels is Romney's niece.
"He has diagnosed this problem absolutely the right way that the president's mercurial nature, his name calling, his insulting of allies is all very destabilizing for government and it's also creating this crisis of leadership both at home and abroad," Dent said. "The real challenge is who else besides Mitt Romney will speak up and say what needs to be said."
"I think at some point we are long past the time for an intervention down in Washington," he added, saying the GOP needs to "sit down with the president" and his family and rein them in. "We are in an unsustainable situation with this president."
Host Poppy Harlow pointed out that Trump's approval within the GOP is still greater than 80%, but Dent was dismissive, saying that number only counted self-identified Republicans.
"What I'm concerned about that there are fewer people self-identifying as Republicans, so the percentage of the president's support looks larger than I believe it actually is," Dent said. "The point is it is the conduct in office and the behavior that is so destabilizing. Look at the market turmoil and other situations we're seeing around the world. People are justifiably alarmed."
