CNN's John Avlon demolishes Trump's phony calls for unity: 'You'd have to have amnesia' to believe him

President Donald Trump made an effort to reach out to Democrats during his State of the Union on Tuesday, but only on the condition that they don't investigate him or his administration.

However, CNN's John Avlon said on Wednesday that it was difficult to take the president's olive branch seriously when he has made his entire political career out of bomb-throwing political rhetoric.

He began by playing a clip of Trump urging Democrats to work with him instead of probing his administration's actions and subpoenaing his associates.

"We must reject the politics of revenge, resistance, and retribution, and embrace the boundless potential of cooperation, compromise, and the common good," Trump said.

Avlon then cut in to call B.S. on the president's newfound love for comity.

"Those are good words, but to believe them you'd have to suffer from amnesia," Avlon said. "His political brand is based upon insults!"

Avlon then played a particularly fiery clip of the president telling his supporters that Democrats were part of an America-hating "mob."

"Today's Democrat party is held hostage by left-wing haters, angry mobs, deep-state radicals, establishment cronies, and their fake news allies!" Trump yelled during a past campaign rally.
