Two former federal prosecutors make ironclad case for indicting Trump right now

Published

on

In a comprehensive opinion piece written for the Daily Beast, former federal prosecutors Mimi Rocah and Renato Mariotti make the case that enough evidence exists against President Donald Trump that he could be indicted on criminal charges right now.

According to the two, were Trump not president, he’d be taken into custody already based solely on the evidence presented in special counsel Robert Mueller’s report — despite what Attorney General Bill Barr says.

“Justice Department policy prohibits the prosecution of a president while in office, but nothing forbids one from being charged after leaving the White House,” the two write. “The Mueller Report even noted one reason to investigate the president was to preserve evidence for possible future use even though Trump can’t be charged now.”

Having said that, the two prosecutors presented their case against Donald Trump, highlighting, “(1) Trump’s efforts to fire Mueller, (2) Trump’s order to falsify evidence about that effort, (3) Trump’s efforts to limit the scope of Mueller’s investigation to exclude his conduct, and (4) Trump’s efforts to try and prevent witnesses from cooperating with investigators probing him and his campaign.”

“While this may bear some passing similarity to mob-related and other obstruction of justice cases we worked on and saw as federal prosecutors, the conduct is more shocking and serious given that Trump is the president of the United States,” they added. “Perhaps the most shocking conduct—which would be the centerpiece of any criminal prosecution—was Trump’s repeated attempts to terminate Mueller. Despite being told by then-White House Counsel Don McGahn that he could face legal jeopardy for doing so, Trump directed McGahn on multiple occasions to fire Mueller or to gin up false conflicts of interest as a pretext to try and get rid of Mueller.”

They also present a prosecutable case of Trump attempting to influence or silence witnesses against him, specifically citing his interactions with former personal attorney Michael Cohen.

“Trump employed mob-like tactics ‘using inducements in the form of positive messages’ to get Cohen, his former attorney, not to cooperate. For example, Trump urged Cohen publicly and privately not to ‘flip,’ promising through counsel that Cohen would be protected as long as he did not go ‘rogue,'” they wrote.

Writing, “To look at these facts and say that a prosecutor could not probably sustain a conviction for obstruction of justice defies logic and our experience,” the two added, “But, the criminal case against Donald Trump, private citizen, would be one that any federal prosecutor—regardless of their politics—should proudly pursue. As federal prosecutors, we were taught to pursue obstruction of justice cases with zeal because if obstruction goes unchecked, our whole system of justice is at risk. ”

Trump’s economic ‘brain trust’ ridiculed as America braces for a trade war recession: report

Published

President Donald Trump appears unprepared to deal with a potential recession, the Associated Press reported Friday.

"Facing a trade war against China that has shaken the global economy, President Donald Trump gathered his most trusted economic aides in the Oval Office," the AP reported. "The assembled brain trust for Friday’s urgent consultations included an economics chief best known for his stint as a cable TV commentator; a trade adviser whose pro-tariff views are outside the economic mainstream; and a treasury secretary (joining by phone on his way back from vacation) who made millions off the housing crisis and then turned to financing Hollywood movies."

Donald Trump in Oval Office

Multiple federal departments have been pushing far-right propaganda to federal employees.

"An arm of the Justice Department regularly sent summaries and links to articles from an online white nationalist publication over the last year, a BuzzFeed News investigation has found. In addition, similar newsletters sent to the Labor Department, ICE, HUD and the Department of Homeland Security, included links and content from hyperpartisan and conspiracy-oriented publishers," BuzzFeed News reported Friday.

The upcoming G7 summit meeting in Bairritz, France will have one more issue to grapple with after North Korea reportedly conducted missile tests.

"South Korea's military confirms that North Korea has launched a projectile this morning. From South Hamgyong Province. Japan's government reported it first," Voice of America Seoul bureau chief William Gallo Tweeted Friday.

"North Korea has now conducted nine rounds of launches since early May. But this one's notable because it comes after Trump says Kim promised "this testing would stop when the exercises end." They did end Tuesday. And yet..." he noted.
