‘That is ridiculous’: Andrew Gillum obliterates Santorum for claiming guns aren’t ‘problem’ in mass shootings

CNN contributor Andrew Gillum called conservative pundit Rick Santorum “ridiculous” on Sunday for suggesting that guns are not the problem in mass shootings.

During a CNN discussion on gun control, Santorum criticized calls from Democratic candidates for the government to buy back assault-style weapons in addition to banning them.

“The truth is something has to give,” Gillum said. “The stranglehold that the NRA seems to have over Congress, over Washington, D.C., in my opinion, is insane. How can we put the priorities of one interest group above the safety, the security of the American people?”

“We will eventually have to get around to the conversation of what do we do with weapons of war that are still out there on our streets,” he added.

Santorum insisted that the idea would never work.

“The Republican Party is going to focus on what the problem is,” Santorum opined. “The problem is not the gun, the problem is the people who are using those guns. The problem is not trying to ban guns or try to put more gun laws in place because the people committing these crimes are breaking the law and they don’t really care whether they violate gun crimes or not.”

“Even Democrats who are not calling for gun bans are saying, ‘Let’s do [background checks] first and then we can get to gun bans,” he added.

Gillum fired back: “It’s not the opioids that’s the problem, it’s the people taking the opioids. That is ridiculous. In Ohio, 30 seconds and they were able to mow down a whole group of people.”

“That just doesn’t make sense,” he told Santorum. “It’s the weapons that we’ve got to get rid of.”

Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swedish climate activist, faced off with members of Congress on Wednesday.

In a hearing before the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, Thunberg declined to submit a written opening statement.

"I don’t want you to listen to me, I want you to listen to the scientists and I want you to unite behind the science,” she said.

Republican Rep. Garret Graves of Louisiana tried to make the point that the U.S. should not curb its carbon emissions until other countries agreed to do so.

"Let me ask you a question," Graves said. "If you were sailing across the ocean and you were picking up trash along the way and for every one piece of trash you pick up, there's a boat right next to you dumping out five pieces, how would that make you feel?"

Conservative activist Kaitlin Bennett was escorted away by police after she tried to interrupt a liberal speaker.

The incident, which was caught on video, appeared to take place in Houston prior to last week's Democratic presidential debate. The video was later posted online by The Blaze's Elijah Schaffer, who was sympathetic to the right-wing heckler.

The video shows a speaker, who is black, talking about systemic racism.

"They have found ways to cage our babies, separate families, mistreat and abuse us," the woman says before she was interrupted by Bennett.
