US COVID death toll projected to hit almost 300,000 by December

President Donald Trump looks on as White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx delivers remarks during a coronavirus update briefing

An influential novel coronavirus pandemic model now projects that deaths from the disease in the United States could hit almost 300,000 by the start of December.

NPR reports that researchers at the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation say that the United States is headed toward a grim fall in which COVID-19 deaths will nearly double from their current level of 160,000 in the next four months.

To put this toll into perspective, NPR writes that it would be “more than four times the number of people who typically die from drug overdoses in the U.S. each year — and more than five times the number killed by the flu in a very bad year.”

Chris Murray, the head of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation’s team, says that he expects the toll to be so high because Americans have shown they quickly grow lax in terms of wearing masks and social distancing as soon as the number of cases in their area starts to go down.

“That creates this potential for [cases] going up, stabilizing, then coming down, [then] people becoming less vigilant, and then cases going up again,” he tells NPR. “I think we will see more of that roller-coaster phenomenon through the fall.”

Trump’s plot to steal the election can be defeated — here’s how

During Tuesday night's debate, Donald Trump, who has gone pure fascist, once again escalated his efforts to scare people out of voting. He encouraged his followers to engage in voter intimidation under the guise of "poll watching," and told armed hate groups to "stand by." Trump also floated a number of baseless conspiracy theories about "voter fraud" that are clearly designed to discourage voting and rationalize legal efforts to stop votes from being counted.

Pennsylvania police are investigating flyers that were distributed asking people to "vote pro-white" in the upcoming election, KDKA reports.

The flyers that began showing up in Greene County were reportedly linked to the Ku Klux Klan. The flyer asks people to "Kontact the experts," the Loyal White Knights, which is a KKK-affiliated group based in Pelham, North Carolina.

"Every officer here was offended and extremely motivated to find the individual passing out this information," Capt. William DeForte said.

‘You just called me a liar!’: Trump campaign official flips out after he’s fact-checked on Biden ear-piece lie

Published

MSNBC host Ayman Mohyeldin attempted to fact-check President Donald Trump's campaign official, Steve Cortes, on the lies coming out of the campaign, but Cortes refused to back down, instead claiming that the host was calling him a "liar."

Cortes began Tuesday by joining other campaign members accusing Vice President Joe Biden of refusing to have his ears inspected by a third party to prove he's not wearing an earpiece. They falsely claimed that Biden agreed to it but then pulled back on the agreement. The Biden campaign has said that isn't true. So, Mohyeldin asked Cortes who made the agreement with the Biden team. Cortes fumbled around, saying it was "the campaign," but Mohyeldin demanded to know what the name was of the campaign official who made the agreement. Cortes said there was a "debate negotiating committee" who made all the demands. He ultimately couldn't name the name.
