2026 Midterm Elections

GOP plans for 'terrifying' influx of midterm cash as Supreme Court mulls gift: report

A looming Supreme Court decision on campaign financing could dramatically amplify the Republican Party's already massive cash advantage over Democrats, flooding GOP nominees with what one Democratic operative described as "terrifying" amounts of additional campaign funding heading into crucial midterm elections.

According to the Washington Post, the Republican National Committee is sitting on "well over $100 million more than Democrats in their party committees" as the midterm election cycle heats up — giving Republicans a significant war chest advantage in what is otherwise shaping up to be a difficult election year for the GOP.

Trump's own Fed pick will head to the 'firing squad'  within two months: expert

President Donald Trump's pick for Fed chair Kevin Warsh was confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday in a 54-45 vote, the most divisive confirmation in the modern era — but that might not be enough for Trump, especially as the Iran war has sent prices soaring in the United States and inflation skyrocketing as economists expect interest rate cuts to be put off.

Warsh was the only Fed chair nominee in modern history to receive nearly zero bipartisan support, with Pennsylvania Democrat Sen. John Fetterman the sole Democrat to cross party lines to vote for him. That vote came the same day Fetterman cast the deciding vote against a war powers resolution to end Trump's Iran war.

GOP hurls support behind progressive over Republican — and expert calls it a 'confession'

One of the largest political action committees aligned with House Republicans is backing a progressive Democrat in California running to unseat Rep. David Valadao (R-CA), a move that one political expert described as a "confession," according to a new report.

The Congressional Leadership Fund recently sent out mailers supporting progressive Democrat Randy Villegas, a college professor, as he competes against Democratic Assemblymember Jasmeet Bains in California's 22nd District, The Sacramento Bee reported. Some experts suggested that the move is intended to help Villegas win the race against Bains by turning moderate voters away from Democrats and toward Republicans.

GOP warned new midterm lifeline is actually a ticking time bomb

Republican chances of holding on to their House majority have gotten a major boost this month with a pair of court rulings, but an analyst warned that might set the stage for new problems down the road.

Two weeks ago, the outlook was dim for GOP chances for keeping the House and not much better for the Senate, with President Donald Trump's poll numbers sinking to new depths and fractures appearing in his MAGA coalition, but that forecast improved since the start of May, wrote MS NOW columnist Hayes Brown.

Trump gets shot across the bow as 3 frustrated Republicans defect to help Dems

New signs of strain were bubbling up among Republicans on Wednesday after three GOP lawmakers sided with Democrats on a vote to end the Iran war, Politico reported.

The war has grown more unpopular among Americans as gas prices soar and Republicans consider the economic fallout ahead of the midterm elections, according to Politico. The 49-50 vote on Wednesday was the closest the Senate has come to having a war powers vote as the Trump administration has missed the legal deadline to tamp down its military operation, "which several Republicans have signaled would be a turning point for their support."

'Cosplaying a doctor': Senate hopeful's old quote undercuts his 'physician' pitch

Abdul El-Sayed, one of the Democratic candidates for Senate in Michigan, is facing accusations of misleading voters by referring to himself as a "physician" without meaningful experience actually practicing medicine with real patients, Politico reported on Tuesday.

"There’s no doubt that El-Sayed has top-notch medical credentials," noted the report. "He attended the University of Michigan Medical School and ended up receiving his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has a doctorate in public health from Oxford University and worked as an assistant professor of epidemiology at Columbia for a year before moving to Detroit to be executive director and health officer of the Detroit Health Department."

Red state Republicans block Trump's scheme to chop up their sole Black district — for now

In a blow to President Donald Trump, South Carolina Republicans have voted down a procedural measure that would unlock the ability to redraw their congressional maps to delete their sole Democratic-leaning, majority-Black congressional district — but it may not be the end of the issue.

According to Politico, "Lawmakers on Tuesday failed to reach the two-thirds majority needed to approve a measure that would have allowed them to take up a vote on redistricting even after the legislative session ends later this week. Five Republicans joined all Democrats in voting against the proposal."

Republicans made a 'tacit admission' about midterms — and it could blow up in their face

A conservative columnist warned on Monday that her Republican colleagues just made a "tacit admission" about the 2026 midterms that could blow up in their face.

S.E. Cupp, a columnist for CNN, said during a segment on "The Source" with host Kaitlan Collins that Republicans have all but admitted that they don't stand a chance during the midterms with their push for mid-cycle redistricting. While those efforts seem to have paid off so far, Cupp warned that they could energize the Democratic base in a way that thwarts all the time Republicans spent trying to rig the election in their favor.

John Cornyn walks back opposition to key policy after Trump sides with his Dem opponent

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) originally slammed a proposal by his Democratic challenger, Presbyterian seminarian and state legislator James Talarico, to lift the federal gas tax in response to Iran-driven fuel inflation, claiming it was "short-sighted," unsustainable, and would blow a hole in the federal budget.

But now President Donald Trump has endorsed that idea himself — leaving Cornyn, who is still an underdog for renomination in the runoff against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and desperate for a Trump endorsement, in an awkward spot.

'The hood is off': Internet explodes over GOP lawmaker's 'brazenly racist' interview

Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA), already one of the GOP's most vulnerable incumbents even after state courts struck down efforts to redraw her district to favor Democrats, landed in hot water on Monday after a clip went viral of her agreeing with a right-wing talk radio host telling Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) to "get your cotton-picking hands off of Virginia" — a common colloquial phrase, but one with a deeply charged double meaning given that Jeffries is Black.

The moment immediately brought her under fire on social media, including from some fellow members of Congress.

'Shameless' Supreme Court's latest double standard sparks outrage

The Supreme Court's latest ruling allowing a red state to pursue its redistricting efforts sparked outrage on Monday.

On Monday, the Supreme Court issued an unsigned ruling allowing Alabama to pursue a new election map that could eliminate two Democratic-held seats. The ruling paved the way for the Republicans to add more seats in Congress as the 2026 midterms approach.

'Get it done!' Trump issues ominous threat to red state Senators ahead of key vote

President Donald Trump issued an ominous threat to state Senators in South Carolina on the eve of a key redistricting vote.

On Tuesday, South Carolina lawmakers are scheduled to vote on a new election map that could eliminate the seat held by Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) as part of the GOP's effort to thwart Democratic gains during the 2026 midterms. Trump posted on Truth Social that he will be "watching closely" as Senators vote, hoping to influence the outcome of the process.
