Newly redrawn map 'virtually assures a Dem pickup' in Alabama: elections analyst

A panel of three federal judges this week redrew Alabama's congressional map, and Cook Political elections analyst Dave Wasserman thinks that Democrats have a reason to celebrate.

Writing on Twitter, Wasserman says that the newly redrawn second Alabama congressional district "swings from Trump +29 to Biden +12, virtually assuring a Dem pickup" in next year's congressional elections.

Wasserman also notes that the new map sets up a potential battle between current Reps. Jerry Carl (R-AL) and Barry Moore (R-AL), who both appear poised to compete in the newly redrawn first Alabama congressional district.

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?

The map redrawing in question was mandated by the United States Supreme Court, which found that the old map amounted to an illegal gerrymander drawn up to deprive Black voters of appropriate representation in the state.

The ruling, which surprised many observers given the court's current rightward tilt, was initially defied by Alabama's Republican dominated state legislature, which prompted a lower court to assign redrawing the map to a panel of three judges.
