From racists to Republicans: These are the 10 most popular Raw Story reports of 2018

The past year was filled with protests, investigations and a huge election filled with Democratic successes and flubs from President Donald Trump. That adds to an uncanny year in which people of color came under attack by middle-aged white suburbanites and overzealous chain-store managers.

At Raw Story, we focused on bringing you the perspectives you haven't heard while highlighting the absurdity from racists, sexists, Nazis and Republicans.

Check out the top stories, according to you, on the site for the past year.

1. Republican Senate candidate who said "I want to come home to a cooked dinner every night"

Missouri Republican Courtland Sykes told the world he wanted women to get back in the kitchen.

“I want to come home to a home cooked dinner every night at six,” he said, referring to demands he makes of his girlfriend. “One that she fixes and one that I expect one day to have daughters learn to fix after they become traditional homemakers and family wives.”

He lost his election.

Valentine's Day 2018 took the lives of 17 people, many of whom were students. Lori Alhadeff lost her daughter in the shooting and in her grief screamed at the president for his disinterest in stopping the crisis. Her emotion was so powerful it broke Brooke Baldwin, who was on the ground in Florida reporting on the horrific story.

The aftermath exposed many holes in the processes in place to protect against these very incidents. It also mobilized students and their families to work to stop gun violence. Alhadeff was one of them, winning a school board seat in November.

3. Bank calls cops on black man because they thought his paycheck was too high

One of the most recent absurdities in "Living while Black" came at the end of the year when one man made too much money to be believed by a bank.

Paul McCowns tried to cash his first paycheck from a job with an electric company Dec. 1 at Huntington Bank in the Cleveland suburb of Brooklyn. Ultimately, they refused to cash the check until they could check with his employer.

Huntington Bank has had time to post photos of cookies and holiday messages but they haven't posted an apology or explanation for their behavior in over a week.

4. 'Get out of the country!': Navajo lawmaker harassed by Arizona Trump supporters accusing him of being here 'illegally'

As the year kicked off with immigration battles, one Native American lawmaker had the unique experience of being told to "go back home."

“We’re walking back, and they start yelling again, ‘Get out of the country.’ At that point, they pointed to Lisette, called her an illegal, and said, ‘Get out, go back home!’” legislative staffer Selianna Robles said. “But they pointed at Jane (Ahern), who works for the House, and they said, ‘No, you can stay.’”

5. ‘Just not who we are’: Montana tavern refuses Donald Trump, Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle

Montana might seem conservative, but when it comes to Donald Trump Jr. and his lady friend, they don't want any of it.

Republican Matt Rosendale’s campaign announced that Donald Trump, Jr. and his girlfriend, former Fox News personality Kimberly Guilfoyle, would be campaigning in Bozeman, Montana. The campaign then announced Trump’s namesake son and Guilfoyle would speak at the Midtown Tavern. Except, the tavern wasn't in the mood. They said they try to stay neutral and didn't want to be seen as supporting Rosendale or Trump.

Rosendale lost his election against Tester in November.

After a shooting at a Pennsylvania synagogue, and just before the November election, Trump decided he needed to visit the synagogue to support the community. The only problem was that the community didn't want him there. Many saw Trump's resistance to denounce white supremacy and neo-Nazis, like the shooter, as part of the problem.

Leaders, officials, indeed, everyone told Trump not to go because it wouldn't go well. Still, he demanded a visit. When he arrived, the protest crowds grew so big so fast that it boxed in his motorcade and forced them to turn around and seek another route to drive back to the airport.

7. Manhunt launched after two white men attack black woman at Walmart for ‘no apparent reason’

For reasons passing in understanding, two men — identified as 22-year-old Dylan Reynolds and 24-year-old Michael Walters “terrorized” a black woman “for no apparent reason” as she was leaving the Wal-Mart, which captured the incident on surveillance video.

Warrants for their arrest were issued as the men were wanted on hate crime charges. They've been arrested and are currently awaiting their trial.

Being at a funeral shouldn't be a challenge, particularly for a president. Yet, when it came to Trump, the president struggled with being in a church with former presidents.

A video posted by CNN’s Keith Boykin shows that Trump stood in stone silence even as the former presidents seated near him read off the Apostles’ Creed.

Trump's major base of support comes from evangelical Christians.

9. Ronan Farrow has the long-rumored Donald Trump tapes from The Apprentice: report

Investigative journalist Ronan Farrow reportedly gained possession of Donald Trump tapes from when he started on NBC’s “The Apprentice," this year. None of the tapes have been leaked, but they're rumored to contain the president dropping the N-word

10. Genealogist digs up Tomi Lahren’s family tree after she attacks immigrants — and the results are hilarious

This wasn't a good year for right-wing commentator Tomi Lahren, who was outed for her immigrant ancestry amid her attacks on "low-skilled" and "low-educated" people coming to the U.S.

“You don’t just come into this country with low skills, low education, not understanding the language and come into our country because someone says it makes them feel nice. That’s not what this country is based on,” she insisted.

According to journalist Jennifer Mendelsohn., “the 1930 census says Tomi’s 3x great-grandmother had been here for 41 years and still spoke German.”
