Donald Trump on Friday sought to distance himself from former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo amid the former president’s attack on Ron DeSantis, Trump’s chief rival in the 2024 Republican nomination race.
Trump in a recent video said “Even Cuomo did better” at responding to the Covid pandemic than Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who last week declared his candidacy.
Trump’s comment drew a reaction from Cuomo, who on Tuesday tweeted: “Donald Trump tells the truth, finally.”
DeSantis said Thursday during an appearance on the “Good Morning New Hampshire” podcast that Trump is “attacking me, siding with Andrew Cuomo in New York, over me…I think that’s a huge mistake.”
Trump on Friday in a post on his Truth Social website referenced a New York Post article that in the former president’s view suggested he was singing Cuomo’s praises.
“I thought he was a horrible Governor, and have made that point for years,” Trump wrote.
“He was the enemy, and I would rip his Fake (Sanctimonious?) News Conference’s apart. I did a lot to help New York, but he didn’t even use the Convention Center or Medical Ship. Crazy! But as bad as he was, all I said was that New York (4th worst) had fewer actual Covid deaths than DeSanctus run Florida (3rd worst).
“Those are the facts!”
