Longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon took a swing at Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) over his support for Israel's escalating war with Iran.
This comes amid fallout from Cruz's confrontational interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who grilled him for not knowing the population of Iran and asking if he really believes Biblical scripture commands him to support Israel as the modern incarnation of its government.
"By the way, for Ted Cruz, yo dude, I'm not exactly the churchiest guy in the world, and I know you're, you know, Mr. Bible. When you talk about the Genesis thing. Isn't our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the new covenant?" Bannon asked.
"Now, you know, I'm a Catholic and the Catholics, as everyone knows, are not as intensely into the Bible. I think that's changing now, not particularly when I was raised. But in the mass, the Catholic mass, at the most solemn part, the new and everlasting covenant. This whole thing — it was one of the most bizarre things I've ever heard in my life. A grown man, a grown man that professes to be a Christian — the New Testament's obviously very important. It's one of the foundational elements. But the New Testament's called the New Testament for a reason. Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, is the new covenant, a new covenant was made. And is that the reason for Israel — look, we're one of the biggest defenders, I think we're the biggest, one of the biggest defenders of Israel and the nation of Israel around. But this can't go on. It can't. It's not helping Israel."
Netanyahu, noted Bannon, "promotes himself inside of Israel as a manipulator of American presidents, a manipulator of the American political process. That's got to stop now, has to stop for the good of Israel. It has to stop."
And regarding the idea that war against Iran is unavoidable, he continued, "Come on, man. We have to have an adult conversation. We're not going to let the shills at Fox ... the same exact crowd saying the same exact thing about the Iraq war, trying to force the President of the United States into a corner. He needs a range of options."
