Journalist Anand Giridharadas criticized President Donald Trump on MS NOW's "Morning Joe" for effectively demoting himself to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's "VP" in the Iran military operation.
Giridharadas argued that Trump has broken core campaign promises by joining the war, which he characterized as a "war of whim" rather than a strategic necessity.
Trump promised no more "stupid wars," instead campaigning for safety, border security, and reduced costs. But all of these are undermined by the conflict in Iran.
Giridharadas noted Israel's goals differ fundamentally from American objectives: Israel reportedly seeks state collapse, while Trump cited destroying Iran's military capabilities and nuclear program.
The war largely increases refugee flows and reignites long-term terrorism threats.
Giridharadas questioned why Trump, who typically demands leverage and control, willingly follows Netanyahu's lead despite funding Israel's military capabilities. Despite noting Israeli reporting indicating differing American and Israeli goals, the U.S. remains "along for the ride" in what benefits Netanyahu's agenda, said Giridharadas.
