Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) should break out his checkbook to make up for his failures in office, Matthew Dowd suggested on Friday.
Dowd, who was the chief strategist for George W. Bush's successful 2004 re-election, thinks Cruz should make the check payable to former Rep. Beto O'Rourke and should cover Cruz's earnings from his second term in the Senate, which he won in 2018 by beating O'Rourke.
"I hereby ask @SenTedCruz @tedcruz to write a check to @BetoORourke for the money Ted has taken as payroll from the fed govt since January 2019. Beto has done more for Texans as a private citizen than Ted has done as senator," Dowd tweeted.
"Please retweet if you agree with me," he urged. And thousands did.
While Cruz received harsh criticism for fleeing Texas during a disaster, O'Rourke has been widely praised for his response to the storm and utility outages.
