Former CIA Director John Brennan said that he is disgusted by members of the Republican Party who are continue to fuel violent right-wing extremists who attacked the U.S Capitol on Jan. 6.
Speaking on MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace, Brennan noted that today's House hearing revealed that militia members from the Capitol attacks want to blow up the U.S. Capitol during the State of the Union address and "kill as many as possible."
"I think it's just the most recent evidence that there are groups of deeply disturbed individuals who live in a world of conspiracy theories, who use violence in order to seek the aims that they're after. to include violence being perpetrated against the Capitol of this country," said Brennan.
He explained that the Jan. 6 attack was the physical manifestation of all of the built-up anger fed by politicians like Donald Trump. Now, things are getting even worse, with militia members intent on taking their attacks a step further.
Wallace asked about politicians who are echoing the conspiracy theories perpetrated by the extremists while standing in positions of power.
"Frankly I'm disgusted by what I have heard coming out of the mouths of senators," said Brennan. "Ron Johnson, Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, and others who continue to give credence to these conspiracy theories. This is just a dereliction of responsibility. I don't care which political party they're from. They have a responsibility to the people, not just of their state and their constituents, but also to this country, to try to do everything possible to defuse these sentiments that are leading to this violent expression of anger and violence against our Capitol. So, therefore, again, I just shake my head. I cannot believe when I hear these things, they continue to fuel the sentiments. They know better. They know they're being dishonest, and they're just antagonizing individuals who are looking for reasons to carry out their acts of violence."
