A beloved mother swan that inhabited a pond in an upstate New York village was killed and eaten by three teens, The New York Post reported.

The teens also reportedly took the swan's cygnets and left her mate alone in the pond.

The swan, who was named "Faye" by village residents, was allegedly eaten as a Memorial Day dinner. The teens told police that they mistook Faye for a large duck.

“They did not know that it was a swan, and they did not know that it was not a wild animal, that it was actually owned by the Village of Manlius,” Manlius Police Sgt. Ken Hatter said.

The three teens were charged with felony grand larceny and criminal mischief, as well as misdemeanor conspiracy and criminal trespass.
