GOP faces 'high risk of a self-own' in summoning Cassidy Hutchinson: analysis

Republicans are taking a big risk demanding Cassidy Hutchinson submit Jan. 6 records to their revived investigation into the 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to a new analysis.

The investigation spearheaded by Rep. Barry Loudermilk — the Georgia Republican who exonerated himself for actions tied to the historic day — is reportedly entering a “new phase" MSNBC analysts said Wednesday could prove problematic.

They pointed to the demands on Hutchinson — the former aide to Trump's chief of staff Mark Meadows who gave damning testimony to House investigators — as proof.

"No doubt there's a high risk for a self-own here for Republicans," said Politico's Betsy Woodruff Swan.

Woodruff Swan believes the new investigation comes at a convenient time for former President Donald Trump, the current conservative frontrunner in the 2024 presidential race.

"Jan. 6 creates a political problem for the former president," Woodruff Swan said. "Republicans are acutely aware that this is something that is going to be front and center for President Biden and his reelection campaign."

She was joined on MSNBC by Timothy J. Heaphy, the attorney who led the House Jan. 6 investigation who posited Republicans hope to discredit Hutchinson before the election.

"I suppose they think there is some benefit to that," he said. "Although, again, Ms. Hutchinson has stood up repeatedly to a lot of scrutiny and been found largely credible."
