President Donald Trump made a stunning claim Tuesday after accusing a federal prosecutor – who also oversaw criminal investigations into him – of having tried to “force” right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk “out of business.”
“Why was the wonderful Turning Point under INVESTIGATION by ‘deranged’ Jack Smith and the corrupt and incompetent Biden administration,” Trump wrote late night Tuesday on his social media platform Truth Social.
“They tried to force Charlie, and many other people and movements, out of business. They Weaponized the Justice Department against Sleepy Joe Biden’s Political Opponents, including ME!”
Smith was appointed in 2022 by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland to a special counsel responsible for overseeing two Justice Department probes into Trump; one for his involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, and the other, his alleged mishandling of classified documents.
At a Senate hearing Tuesday, Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) claimed that under the administration of former President Joe Biden, a “partisan” operation within the DOJ existed to target Trump and Republican organizations, including Kirk’s own Turning Point USA, the right-wing conservative advocacy organization. Grassley later published documents to support his claim, though Grassley’s assertion that the investigations were partisan remains disputed.
“They allowed the daughter of a judge, on one of the corrupt trials against me, to become the biggest fund raiser for Biden and [former Vice President] Kamala [Harris], making many millions of dollars for herself and her family, but with her father, the judge, not only refusing to RECUSE himself, but putting a gag order on me, not allowing any talk about their family corruption and unprecedented conflict of interest,” Trump wrote.
“Every leading legal analyst and pundit said this trial was wrong and should not have been allowed to go forward. But it did because of a corrupt judge who will hopefully pay a very big price for his illegal actions, someday!”
Kirk was killed last week while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University, an incident that sparked widespread and bi-partisan condemnation.
