President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a high-stakes summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but was notably not greeted by Jinping at the airport — a detail critics characterized as a diplomatic snub.

Instead of a presidential welcome, Trump was met by U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue, Jinping's vice president Han Zheng, China's Ambassador to Washington Xie Feng, and Executive Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Ma Zhaoxu.

Progressive advocacy platform Call To Activism noted the absence, stating, "MAGA is in spin mode heralding the 'red carpet treatment,' but the visit is already at a rocky start."

Trump's niece Mary Trump remarked on social media, “Xi couldn't be bothered to meet Donald at the airport because he understands as well as Donald does that humiliating your underlings is a great way to keep them in check.”

Trump enters the summit weakened by his failure to secure an Iran peace deal, which was undercut Monday when Tehran agreed to a Chinese-brokered U.S. and Iran agreement instead.
