A Virginia man was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the shooting death of Eunice Dwumfour, a New Jersey councilwoman, ABC News reports.
Rashid Ali Bynum, 28, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone told reporters Tuesday.
Dwumfour, 30, was the mother of a 12-year-old girl and a leader at her church who worked as a business analyst and part-time as an emergency medical technician.
Dwumfour, a Republican, in 2021 defeated an incumbent Democrat to win a Sayreville Borough Council seat.
Bynum knew Dwumfour from a church, according to the report.
Dwumfour on Feb. 1 suffered multiple gunshot wounds while she was in her SUV outside her home.
New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin addressed Dwumfour's family, which attended the news conference.

"There are no words that can be said to you to make you whole," Platkin said.
"I did not know Eunice. I wish I had. But I know that she was a public servant."
"I hope that today is the beginning of a healing process, and also the beginning of a sense of justice."
