Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) has launched a primary challenge against President Joe Biden despite the fact that the centrist Democrat says he agrees with Biden's approach to facing many of the challenges currently facing America.

Phillips has indicated so far that his reason for challenging Biden is polls showing him to be unpopular and in danger of losing to former President Donald Trump next year.

During an appearance on CNN Friday, however, contributor Errol Louis argued that this critique of Biden is something of a double-edged sword for Phillips.

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?

"That comment about [Biden's polling] numbers is going to blow up in his face when we start looking at numbers that show people don't know who he is is, what he stands for or why they should vote for him," Louis commented. "Numbers cut both ways. 50-plus years in politics and national leadership by Joe Biden counts for a lot. It does mean something and will play out in the numbers."

Phillips for many months has been sounding the alarm about Biden's electoral prospects heading into 2024 and about the possibility that concerns about the president's age could lead to a second Trump term.
