Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives erupted as Republicans gaveled into recess on Tuesday despite a looming government shutdown.

According to CBS, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) was seeking unanimous consent to pass a Democratic resolution that would have prevented the shutdown.

However, the presiding Republican, Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-VA), refused to recognize DeLauro and gaveled the meeting to recess. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) reportedly ordered the recess to pressure Democrats to accept a Republican resolution to keep the government open.

Democrats could be heard shouting "shame on you" and "do your job."

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) urged reporters to note that over 100 Democrats were present, while only a few Republicans bothered to attend the session.

"Look at who's here, and who's not! We're here!" he exclaimed.
