Democrats on Wednesday shouted “shame! shame! shame!” on the House floor in protest over the chamber's vote to censure Rep. Adam Schiff for his role in investigating former President Donald Trump’s ties to Russia.
Schiff, the 25th House member to be censured in U.S. history, struck a defiant tone before the House in party-line vote (213-209) voted to censure him, calling the measure a “badge of honor.”
Fellow Democrats surrounded Schiff and cheered “Adam, Adam, Adam” as he approached the House well for his censure.
The shouts of Democrats interrupted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy who said at one point, “I have all night.”
According to the resolution, Schiff during Trump’s presidency “abused this trust by saying there was evidence of collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia.”
“Representative Schiff purposely deceived his Committee, Congress, and the American people,” the resolution said.
Schiff earlier in the day during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Deadline: White House with Nicole Wallace” said that it was apparent to him that House Republicans in censuring him were doing Trump’s bidding.
“I think they go after people that they feel are a threat or are effective in holding them accountable, or holding Donald Trump accountable, and I don’t think this is going to be the last attack on me because they are going to continue to serve this disgraced former president,” Schiff said.
“They have essentially decided that they’re going to be fully subservient to his wishes, and Trump put out the word that if any of them, like last week when almost one out of 10 Republicans voted against the bogus resolution, that if anyone does that again, he wants them primary challenged.”
More than 20 Republicans joined Democrats in voting to block a similar resolution, but they joined their GOP colleagues on Wednesday after Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) pulled a provision calling for Schiff to face a fine of up to $16 million if the House Ethics Committee determined he had lied.
Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) compared the show of support to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
"Is this an insurrection?" the far-right congresswoman tweeted.
