A super PAC backing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis presidential campaign released a 30-second attack ad today in which Donald Trump’s voice was created by artificial intelligence (AI), the Hill reported Tuesday.
The ad from the Never Back Down PAC praised popular Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds as “a conservative champion (who) signed the heartbeat bill and stands up for Iowans every day.” It then posed the question, “Why is Donald Trump attacking her?”
At that point, the ad uses an AI version of Trump’s voices narrating one of his Truth Social posts in which he wrote the following:
“I opened up the governor position for Kim Reynolds, and when she fell behind, I endorsed her, did big rallies and she won. Now, she wants to remain ‘neutral,’ I don’t invite her to events.”
The ad then states, “Trump should fight Democrats, not Republicans.”
The super PAC confirmed to The Hill that it used AI technology to “give voice to Trump’s words and Truth Social.”
The Hill reported, “Trump’s criticism of Reynolds comes after a New York Times report detailing frustration within the former president’s campaign over Reynolds’s appearances with DeSantis when he stopped in Iowa for his campaign.”
On June 22, the Federal Election Commission deadlocked with a 3-3 on a request to develop regulations for AI-generated deepfake political ads, Roll Call reported. It had been requested to do so by Public Citizen, a nonpartisan advocacy group, which had argued that advances in AI would provide political operatives an opportunity to misrepresent opponents positions in violation of federal law.
