Senate Democrats just cut a deal with Republicans and the White House to ram through five massive spending bills funding a large swathe of the government for the rest of the fiscal year.
The New York Times reported Thursday that they're also slapping a two-week Band-Aid on Department of Homeland Security funding while they hammer out guardrails to rein in immigration agents amid nationwide backlash to killings at the hands of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Republicans had sought several weeks of DHS funding. Democrats dug in their heels for the short-term measure, the Times noted.
It's unclear whether the House will be able to move fast enough to process all the bills after the Senate passes them. The clock is ticking, with a government shutdown looming at midnight Friday.
