The Trump administration has adopted an unusual tactic in its voter fraud investigation by obtaining IP addresses of people who registered to vote online.
The FBI recently requested and received an IP address associated with an online voter registration in South Carolina, with state and local assistance, marking the first time a veteran York County election official has encountered such a request, according to Axios.
While IP addresses do not reveal personal identity, they can indicate general location and internet service provider data.
A former senior Justice Department official characterized the request as an inappropriate "fishing expedition" into private voter data.
This South Carolina case is part of a broader multi-agency effort tied to Trump's unsubstantiated 2020 election fraud claims.
The Justice Department, or DOJ, is simultaneously suing 30 states and Washington, D.C., for voter roll access.
Critics argue the campaign lacks evidence of systemic fraud, with former DOJ civil rights counsel Robert Weiner stating the administration seeks to "undermine confidence in the integrity of the federal election process."
