X owner Elon Musk's decision to start shutting down federal agencies on a whim is apparently not playing well with many American voters.

The Portland Press Herald reports that members of Congress who represent Maine have been receiving what Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME) describes as an "unprecedented" number of calls from "panic-stricken" residents who are worried about Musk arbitrarily slashing at programs that benefit them.

"We are just in the middle of a daily, lawless amount of chaos and confusion from the executive branch that really is trying to take over the government’s responsibility for funding," she told the paper.

Pingree's office said that it had received 2,000 calls over the last two days alone, or more than 20 times the number of calls it normally receives on a given day.

The congresswoman also told the Press Herald that she has serious questions about the legality of Musk's actions.

“As a member of the Appropriations Committee, it’s still totally confusing about what funding is allowed and what’s blocked. We can’t get access to that information. Imagine what it’s like being one of those recipients. And we know that many of those funds are still blocked,” she said. “There is no legal way the president should be impounding those funds."
