Elon Musk's team has begun a mass layoff of federal workers, The Washington Post reported Wednesday night.

The Post obtained a copy of an email sent Wednesday morning to staff from an official in the Office of Personnel Management stating that sweeping layoffs had begun and were overwhelming the agency, which acts as the government's human resources department.

The Post reported that the office is also taking more control over hiring practices.

The layoffs come as Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency task force eyes slashing agency budgets across the federal government by as much as 40 percent, according to the Post. Agencies Trump favors were expected to be spared some, such as the Defense Department and the Homeland Security Department. Those plans have not been finalized.

The report comes a day after Musk told reporters in the White House: “The people voted for major government reform and that’s what the people are going to get. They’re going to get what they voted for.”

It also comes after the second Trump administration secured its first big court victory Wednesday when a Massachusetts judge lifted a pause on his plan to offer buyouts to federal workers.
