French President Emmanuel Macron took an apparent jab at President Donald Trump while speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Specifically, Macron appeared to be referencing Trump’s increasingly aggressive efforts to have the United States acquire Greenland – a territory of Denmark – including by slapping eight European nations, including France, with new tariffs until the territory comes under U.S. control.
“Let's not be divided, let's not accept the global order which will be decided by those who claim to have the bigger voice, or the bigger teeth, or the bigger... I don't know,” said Macron, who wore sunglasses during the speech.
His jab elicited a few laughs from the crowd.
“Let's be coordinated, let's not waste time with crazy ideas. Let's not open new topics, and it's not a time for new imperialism or new colonialism, this is a time of cooperation in order to fix these three global challenges for our fellow citizens – (growth, peace, climate) – full stop.”
Trump recently threatened to place an additional 200% tariff on French wine imports, a threat issued in the wake of Macron’s apparent refusal to join his proposed “Board of Peace,” an international body led by Trump that the president has asked nations to pay $1 billion for permanent membership.French President @EmmanuelMacron takes apparent dig at Trump over his campaign to acquire Greenland:
