WATCH: Dem lawmaker snaps at MSNBC host for grilling him on why Democrats are doing nothing about Trump obstruction
On Saturday, House Judiciary Committee Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) clashed with MSNBC's Joy Reid over how to move forward with impeachment proceedings for President Donald Trump's potential obstruction of justice.
"We are involved in a team sport, not an individual sport," said Raskin. "What we are focused on now is should we have an impeachment inquiry into whether there were high crimes and misdemeanors, not low crimes like Bill Clinton committed. Like obstruction of justice, contempt of power which were the counts in the Nixon articles. Were such crimes committed. If so, what should we do about it? More and more Democrats are coming around to a place that this is an inescapable situation this is something that has been taken for granted by both parties."
"This is a sharply divided country," Reid said. "Republicans don't really seem to care about bringing anybody along ... The attorney general is fully bought in. He is of no use as attorney general. What are you going to do about it?"
"Joy, I can tell you are frustrated and angry," said Raskin. "We are not going to descend to political and racial and tribal places like they have ... We believe in the rule of law. I think we are moving towards inquiry."
Raskin added that special counsel Robert Mueller had detailed 11 potential cases of obstruction of justice. "What special counsel Mueller said, we are going to turn it over to Congress. The impeachment is just an indictment where we would bring them forward. People have to understand that's what an impeachment is. When people say, well, impeach the president. That's only halfway. They are talking about removing the president. We are only halfway there. That is an appropriate course of action."
"Everybody across the board should be able to get behind this because of the high crimes and misdemeanors in the report that attorney general Barr has done everything in his power to suppress and mislead the public about," Raskin explained.
