MSNBC’s Morning Joe mocks Trump's Special Olympics debacle: If they were Nazis they’d be the ones from Hogan’s Heroes
MSNBC's Joe Scarborough and guest Tom Nichols had nothing but scorn and ridicule for President Donald Trump as the White House scrambled to distance itself from Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos's proposal to zero out federal funding for the Special Olympics, with Scarborough comparing Republicans to cartoon Nazis and Nichols openly eulogizing the party.
The segment opened with co-host Mika Brzezinski's horrified reaction to Trump's clumsy reversal, which sent Scarborough into peals of laughter.
"Whenever people get overcharged and start talking about Donald Trump and say 'they're all Nazis,' no, no, no, no -- come on, they're not Nazis," Scarborough said. "But if they were Nazis they'd be the ones from Hogan's Heroes. This is Colonel Klink action here. They are so incompetent."
"Personally, I like Mr. Magoo, that comparison better," he added. "But we've seen this happen time and again where Donald Trump makes just an absolutely terrible political mistake, gets caught, then has to walk it back, but still has the damage lingering."
"I want to make a point about this that links Special Olympics and the Special Committee on Intelligence," chimed in Nichols. "It's very clear that this is the president's party, that it is a personality-driven party that does what Donald Trump wants it to do and this notion that there are secret Republican rebels and people that will stand up to the president and save the party, I mean, how many more times does this have to happen before we know that's just not true?"
"This isn't like previous Democratic or Republican Parties where you have someone in the party that will go to the president and say 'look, you're wrong' or 'look, this has to change,'" Nichols said. "If the president says 'the moon is made out of green cheese,' the committee on science and technology will say 'it is indeed, and we think it's gouda or parmesan.'"
"They will find a way to agree with the president and that's why the Republican Party is being hollowed out," he added. "That's why they don't have much of a future no matter what happens in 2020."
