Fox News co-host Harold Ford Jr. implored President Donald Trump to drop his prosecution of former FBI Director James Comey on Wednesday, saying that the president should instead seek to "unite the country."

Ford made the comments during the Fox News show "The Five" on Wednesday. The comments were made at a time when reports indicate Trump has remade the Justice Department into his personal law enforcement agency.

"What are you doing?" Ford asked. "Unite us. Don't seek this retribution, Mr. President."

According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, Comey's prosecution was predicated on an "errant text" from Trump to Attorney General Pam Bondi. The report indicates Trump thought he sent his Sept. 20 Truth Social message telling Bondi, "we can't delay [indicting Comey] any longer" via private message.

Instead, Trump posted it publicly, which forced Bondi to act, according to the report.

Ford said Trump's moves to indict Comey made him incredulous of the president's intentions.

"When President Trump was running for office a second time, and people asked him about retribution, he said 'Success will be out retribution,'" Ford said. "Although I didn't vote for President Trump, I believed him. He's given me reason to doubt and not believe now."
