The X account of the late Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) was activated Tuesday to promote James Walkinshaw, Connolly's former chief of staff, in the primary to replace him, Axios reported.

"Early voting starts TODAY in VA-11!" said the post. "Before passing, Gerry endorsed @JamesWalkinshaw to carry the torch. Let’s honor that legacy and vote for bold leadership that’ll fight for us every day."

Connolly, who briefly served as the ranking member on the House Oversight Committee, passed away earlier this year after a battle with cancer. He endorsed Walkinshaw, who is currently leading primary polls, to replace him before his death.

"This isn't even the first time this year a dead House Democrat's social media has unexpectedly come alive," noted Axios. "Deceased Rep. Sylvester Turner's (D-Texas) account on X began following fellow members of Congress and reporters despite him passing away the month before."

Despite this, the post triggered some criticism from other party officials.

"This is extremely unethical and downright disgusting," wrote Roanoke Young Democrats chief Sullivan Manley. "Shame on James Walkinshaw’s campaign for exploiting Gerry’s name after his passing to prop up his campaign."

"This is exactly why Walkinshaw should lose," wrote Virginia Democratic Party rural caucus vice chair Dustin Keith. "It's entirely inappropriate and disgusting to exploit access to the late Congressman's socials for your own political gain." He urged voters to instead support Walkinshaw's rival, Del. Irene Shin.
