According to a former member of Donald Trump’s first administration, the president had a bad night as the GOP took devastating losses in Congress and in statehouses; Vice President JD Vance’s was worse, and the Republican Party will have a major problem in the next presidential election.
Speaking with “Way Too Early” host Ali Vitali, Matthew Bartlett, a Trump appointee to the U.S. Department of State in the first administration, painted a grim picture for the GOP.
“I mean, listen, Ali, this was a bad night for Republicans,” he began. “This was the worst night for Donald Trump. This was the absolute worst night for JD Vance, who has shown nothing but the wrong instincts for two years now.”
“When Renee Good was shot, he ran to the podium to denounce her. When Vivek Ramaswamy ran the most disgraceful ad we've seen in American politics, he [Vance] went and lectured Republicans about whining about it — his instincts are horrible,” he elaborated.
“So I think, with tonight, there's probably a bit more vulnerability of him in a [2028] primary,” he predicted. “There might be some people that might want to take another look at that, but there might be even more doom on the horizon for that 2028. That ‘06, ‘08 one-two punch.”
“If it's been this bad with two years of Trump, it's going to be even worse with the next two years. And how do you win?” he asked.
