RNC fundraising off impeachment — but Trump and his lawyers don’t get any of it

The Republican National Committee is fundraising off of President Donald Trump's second impeachment, but they're not sharing the money they raise, reported the Huffington Post on Thursday.

In the past several months, Trump has worked to fundraise for his election lawsuits, collecting $207 million from Election Day to Nov. 23, said PolitiFact.

"Using emails and text messages sent to a small-donor list created jointly by the Republican National Committee and Trump's campaign, the appeals claim to be aiding his cause during the Senate proceedings," said HuffPo.

One text message called the impeachment trial a "SCAM" (sic) while an email read "WE CANNOT (sic) let this madness go on any longer."

The report explained that the links to donate all went to RNC websites and none of the fundraising dollars would be sent to Trump's campaign or his new "leadership committee."

"Contributions are used to fund all RNC programs, and will be spent as the RNC determines within its sole discretion," HuffPo said the disclaimer claimed.

The report described the fundraising efforts as similar to "a recent bait-and-switch scheme by Trump himself."

During the campaign for the runoff elections in Georgia in December, Trump fundraised for the Republican candidates there, asking that his supporters help the senators keep their seats.

Politico reported that many Republicans were asking their lists to donate to the endangered GOP senators directly, but Trump asked that people support them through his PAC.

"Lower down on the page, it notes that 75 percent of each donation goes to Trump's political action committee, Save America, up to the first $5,000 given. Twenty-five percent then goes to the RNC, which paid for Trump's recent visit to the state," said the Politico report.
