Donald Trump's former lawyer David Urban lost his cool Tuesday as he went head-to-head in a live clash with political commentator Karen Finney.
The pair first gave their thoughts on the president's upcoming meeting with the new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
However, it was their thoughts on Trump cutting off Harvard’s Federal research grants that left tempers frayed..
“The Trump administration [is] now disqualifying Harvard from future research grants,” anchor Sara Sidner said. “What do you make of this? Secretary of Education Linda McMahon saying, at its best, universities should fulfill the highest ideals of our nation and enlighten the thousands of hopeful students who walk through its magnificent gate, but Harvard has betrayed its ideal.' What do you make of this, Karen?”
“When you're looking at them taking away millions and millions of dollars from Harvard, well, it's going to hurt Americans, period. Full stop. I mean, the kind of research that is going on at our universities and institutions is critical, whether it's cancer research, whether it is, you know, research about disease,” Finney said.
“So, I mean, this is really cutting off our nose to spite our face. I mean, look, the president is trying to enact an ideological agenda around things that he considers woke, which is incredibly offensive. Diversity, equity and inclusion is a core value of this country. It has been part of our American story from the beginning.”
She added, “But this is part of him imposing an ideological agenda. but most importantly, and what I think we can't lose focus on, this is an important fight, and Harvard is in it. But thematically, I think what's important and what I hope Democrats focus on is that this is not what people elected him to do.”
“I'm going to have to leave it there,” Sidner said, trying to end the conversation. “David, I know you have a lot to say about that.”
Urban cut in, “Let me just real quickly.”
Finney attempted to cut in and rolled her eyes.
“I applaud President Trump,” Urban said. “Listen, Harvard is a hedge fund that's teaching some kids, okay? They have billions of dollars, Sara. Billions of dollars of endowment. They are misusing U.S. taxpayers' dollars. they need to be held accountable.”
“They're not!” Finney interjected. “David, it's a private institution!"
The two then attempted to talk over each other.
“Karen, look at Bill Ackman,” Urban said. “Look at all these Harvard alumni who are up in arms.” He went on to call it a "filthy rich Ivy League institution."
"It is a private institution. The government doesn't get to tell them,” Finney attempted to interject again.
“You know what, Karen? Karen, hold on, let me finish,” he interjected as the two barely gave each other the change to be heard.
“David. David,” she said.
Urban went on to make his point before Sidner cut him off. “I will just say, a lot of folks in the Trump administration graduated from Harvard. We are going to leave it there.”
