A new report seemed to rattle officials at the Department of Homeland Security.
DHS has moved to "rapidly deport" migrant children who come to the United States without parents or legal guardians, CNN reported, citing two DHS sources. DHS is also reportedly asking teens whether they want to be voluntarily deported from the country. The action is happening at a time when the Trump administration seeks to deport as many as 3,000 people a day.
“A child is in no position to understand the consequences of self-deporting, particularly without the guidance of an attorney,” Neha Desai, managing director of Children’s Human Rights at the National Center for Youth Law, told CNN about the new policy.
“Unaccompanied children are being used as pawns in an effort to deport as many people as possible, regardless of the human toll it takes on the most vulnerable members of our community," Desai continued.
DHS lashed out at CNN over the report on its official X account.
"FAKE NEWS," the post exclaims. "The TOP priority of the Trump Administration is the safety of children and ensuring they are reunited with their parents or safe guardian—UNLIKE the Biden administration, which LOST nearly 300,000 migrant children."
"The only change pursuant to the Big Beautiful Bill is expanding this option to return home to [unaccompanied alien children] from additional countries beyond Mexico and Canada," the post adds.
