Former Republican Party chairman Michael Steele attacked members of his party for their complaints about the plea deal reportedly struck by Hunter Biden.
The president's son will plead guilty to two counts of tax evasion after owing more than $200,000, according to the office of U.S. Attorney David Weiss. Biden did pay the taxes in 2021, but only after the five-year investigation into him began.
It's being compared to Roger Stone's $2 million in unpaid taxes in 2021. Stone eventually agreed to pay the back taxes in 2022, but got no additional punishment.
Another charge involved lying on a federal form to purchase a gun. It's rarely able to be enforced, but due to Biden's book, he revealed he was on drugs at the time he purchased the gun – forms needed to purchase the gun ask if the buyer is currently on drugs. The maximum sentence for that felony charge would be 10 years in prison.
Biden will enter a diversion agreement on count of being a drug user in possession of a firearm, according to multiple sources. As part of his plea deal, he is expected to avoid jail time.
On Tuesday, Speaker Kevin McCarthy complained that any normal person would be imprisoned for 10 years for the crime while Biden is getting a "traffic ticket."
Biden will be monitored for two years to ensure he remains drug-free. If he does not remain drug-free, the case will be taken back to court.
"It doesn't matter what the prosecution came back" with, Steele said on MSNBC. "What deal was negotiated here short of absolute jail time or being put under the jail, that doesn't matter for the Trump electorate nor does it matter for Trump. He still would be claiming this was a better deal, even if Hunter Biden went to jail."
