President Donald Trump announced plans to exclude undocumented immigrants from the U.S. Census, breaking with over two centuries of precedent in which all residents have been counted. Posting on Truth Social, Trump instructed the Department of Commerce to create a "highly accurate" count informed by the 2024 presidential election results. Legal experts say the move is unconstitutional, as the Constitution requires counting the “whole number of persons.” Similar efforts by Trump in 2020 were blocked by the Supreme Court. Critics warn the plan would reduce congressional representation, cut federal funding, and spread fear among immigrant communities, potentially discouraging even legal residents from participating.
