Tensions flared Tuesday during a press briefing as law enforcement officials refused to answer a question regarding the deadly Central Texas flood that killed at least 104 people, with dozens more missing.
A reporter asked Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha who would have been in charge of the local Office of Emergency Management at the time of the flood, a question that would go ultimately unanswered.
“When we get notified,” Leitha said before being interrupted. “You’re not emergency management!” a reporter shouted. “You’re not going to answer the question!”
Lt. Colonel Ben Baker with the Texas Game Wardens took charge of the podium in an apparent effort to de-escalate.
“We understand you have many questions, but right now this team up here is focused on bringing people home,” Baker said.
“It seems like you're dodging,” a reporter fired back. “You should be able to answer who was in charge of the emergency operation center at the time.”
Instead of answering, Baker went on to ask the pool of reporters if anyone else had another question.
