Democratic strategist James Carville has a simple assignment for his longtime party: focus on the latest Trump scandal, and pursue it with single-minded relentlessness.
Specifically, Carville told NewsNation's Chris Cuomo in a segment spotlighted by the Huffington Post, they need to hammer President Donald Trump's planned acceptance of a $400 million luxury jumbo jet from the government of Qatar right as he is touring the Middle East trying to make diplomatic and financial deals.
The move has been so controversial that even some die-hard Trump supporters have called him out for accepting "jihadist" gifts.
“He’s taking a $400 million jet for lifetime use from a foreign government,” Carville told Cuomo. “He’s selling places at a White House dinner for people that buy his memecoin, which goes right into his pocket. And that’s what the tragedy is, that’s what the Democrats need to do.”
Trump, for his part, has said he would be "stupid" not to accept the plane and asserts that it isn't really his plane because it will be handed over to his presidential library in his postpresidency.
As far as Carville is concerned, this is the Democrats' ticket to deal some real damage to the Trump presidency.
“They need to jump on this corruption and never get off of it,” he said. “This is why, while he’s having dinner at the White House, rewarding people who are giving him money, taking airplanes, knocking 8.6 million people off of health insurance — if the Democrats can’t message against that, they oughta just blow themselves up.”
