Democratic strategist James Carville and Fox News host Will Cain tangled on Cain's eponymous show Wednesday afternoon over political rhetoric.

The dispute occurred just days after Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) deleted a social media post that was widely condemned following the assassination of Minnesota state lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark.

"I don't think it's a few isolated incidents that you have to defend when it comes to how the left is talking about America," Cain said, referring to protesters in Los Angeles burning rideshare vehicles and waving Mexican flags. "That, to me, is something that is a problem, not just for his legal future but also for your party and what it symbolically has embraced."

Carville replied that the image of an LA protester holding a Mexican flag while on top of a car isn't representative of the Democratic party as a whole.

" California has more than 40 million people and the fourth-largest economy in the world," Carville replied. "We should all be so lucky to live in a place as prosperous as California."

"I can't speak for 40 million people and someone who is holding up a Mexican flag in Los Angeles. That's idiotic," Carville continued.

Cain then clarified that he is asking Carville to defend the Democratic Party. Carville replied with a list of successes Democrats have achieved over the last several decades.

"The Democratic Party has been the most effective political party in the history of the world," Carville said. "It started social security; it brought civil rights; it brought women's rights; it brought gay rights; it brought the last party to bring a balanced budget to the United States of America. It shepherded America to the greatest age of prosperity in the 1990s. The Democratic Party really does not need me to defend it."
